How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician shows you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is situated on the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated on the outside of the transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. The sensor sends signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this information to regulate the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to link with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu has to know when the crankshaft reached TDC and also the location of the camshaft so that it can activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This means that the Crank Shaft is out of line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate a chain stretch or a jump in the chain link of the upper timing chain. The code will not appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It is a little tricky to test since there are different connector pins, and they all have different functions. The best method for doing this is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read about 1000 ohms when the sensor is operating at its maximum. Look for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if you have problems with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll, I experienced a big cut in power as if the engine was running out of gas or the injectors aren't firing anymore. I took out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were soaked in gasoline, and the fourth was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each injector hole, and when I turn the engine on without sparks, the 3 with gazoline jump right out. The 4th one stays closed. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 i get 0ohm. I assume that the problem is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset PID without success. The car is able to start when the website G28 is disconnected and is running fine when it is connected however it has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for the coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature value of -49c, even if I unplug it. I also noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit is showing 2 get more info bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 receives a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is similar to the G4 sender and both here work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. It is easy to find a spare in a wrecking shop or a parts store. Testing them is easy to do - just put your DMM in resistance mode and measure between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's end up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black connector's end). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines requires to know the position and speed of the crankshaft to determine timing of fuel injectors, etc. It uses a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If either of these goes badly, you will see codes on the diagnostic scanner which can cause the engine to shut down.

Some of the symptoms of a malfunctioning G28 sensor include an inaccurate rev counter in the gearbox, gears shifting quicker than normal and/or a misfire when in gear. It is probable that the sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you encounter any of these symptoms. They're inexpensive and easy to locate, especially in the case of a Bosch model like ours. If you prefer, GM's version of this component is an option.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine sensor could cause a number of problems in your vehicle. It's an essential component of the transmission in your Audi, as it transmits information to the ECU regarding how fast or slow the engine of the car is spinning. This sensor could cause the transmission to malfunction and other components in the car to be affected.

The G5 engine sensor is located at the edge of the transmission, over the flywheel ring. It transmits a signal via gray wire to ECU pin T55/49.
